“After many years of leading a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Huddle and then playing with the Eagles I had seen the value of connecting sports and ministry. However, I really began to see what an amazing tool soccer could be to share the love of Jesus when I began coaching at a local high school while doing full-time Youth Ministry. Through the relationships developed on that field I was able to be there for students when they struggle with things like deep spiritual questions, family problems, or deaths of people they love. Because a relationship had been cultivated on those fields I was able to offer them the hope of Jesus Christ during the most difficult and transformational times.”

Born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, Casey was an All-South and All-State player for Millbrook High School. He went on to Barton College in Wilson, NC as a scholarship player, again earning All-South honors. After one season playing with the Charlotte Eagles (owned by Missionary Athletes International) of the USL, Casey chose a vocation of youth ministry and coaching over professional soccer. He worked in Youth Ministry (Grace Community Church, Raleigh) and coaching (Millbrook High School) for 6 years before a 3 month missions visit to South Africa in 2008 where this vision was born. Casey has been married since 2002 to his beautiful wife Sarah and has a daughter named Kieren.

Michael Jenkins

“As a 16 year-old obsessed with sport, I had a high school rugby coach called Andy. Andy was a man's man by anyone's reckoning; but first and foremost he was God's man. Because he cared enough to meet a rough bunch of boys on a rugby field, he earned the right to speak to our hearts, and it was at about that time that I began to realize that following Christ would be the most adventurous, significant and courageous way to live life. And when a boy is offered adventure, significance and courage, who cares about cool?

A few years later I found myself on those same fields, and this time I was the coach looking into the faces of young men in the frighteningly reckless process of making the decisions that would shape their lives. I never really had a clear strategy for combining sport with talking about Jesus, but just set out to coach the boys with great enthusiasm and great love. Somehow rugby pointers became advice about life, relationships and the Great Captain, and by the end of the year I had the honor of baptizing 4 of my team. Since those times, I have been a firm believer that for some young men, the sports field is the very best chapel, a coach is the most effective minister, and my passion for ministry through sports was born.”
Michael is the director of ACTS Volunteers (www.actsafrica.com) – an organization that partners short term mission volunteers with effective Christian ministries in Africa. Michael was born and raised in Zimbabwe, now resides in Cape Town and is possibly Africa's most ardent sports fan.
